UTHC’s nursing staff comprises about a hundred nurses who work at the Kuujjuak hospital or at one of the 6 service points around Ungava Bay

A role so important for the community !

With patients coming in for various health issues on a day to day basis, UTHC’s nursing personnel enjoy varied and stimulating work conditions

- Unit nurses accompany the first respondent/ambulance driver to the person’s home in order to assess the situation
- Medical air evacuations from a village to Kuujjuaq’s hospital or to a health facility elsewhere than in Nunavik

Nursing care structure

Hospital care units

The 23-bed hospital offers several and diversified units. Nurses play a wide-ranging role and treat a diverse clientele. Nurses may therefore offer care in the following: general medicine, minor surgery, intensive care, psychiatry, obstetrics, pediatrics, gerontology, nursery care, delivery room, voluntary pregnancy interruption (VPI) and physical rehabilitation
In addition to participating in medical air evacuations when needed, nurses are required, each in their turn, to get acquainted with CLSC points of service work and acquire the qualifications necessary to take on a wider role

CLSC points of service

Each village north of Kuujjuaq has a CLSC point of service. Two to six nurses assume CLSC points of service care, both emergency and community services. In this context, nurses take on a wider role and alternatively share call duty so that services can be offered on a continual basis

Community health and public health

In this context, the nurses’ role is primarily prevention and promotion. They work in close collaboration with other community actors (school, day care, municipality, etc.), and in proximity with the population
