How is the health of people living in northern Quebec?

Why do Inuit go to the emergency room? For what diseases are they hospitalized or flown to southern Quebec?

In February 2024, a TV crew from the documentary series “De garde 24/7” came to Kuujjuaq, Kangirsuk and Kangiqsujuaq to learn more about the reality of northern health care. Their goal: to present to the Quebec population the variety of care offered to the Inuit communities of Ungava Bay who attend the Tulattavik Health Centre and its hospital.

How can we treat people with health problems who require urgent, specialized or ultra-specialized medical treatment?

Through Télé-Québec, accompany the doctors and health professionals of the Ungava Tulattavik Health Center in their daily lives and meet the patients they treat. Employee testimonials and images illustrating the realities of users and their companions will provide a better understanding of Inuit culture, spirituality and values.

It is an opportunity to become aware of what a remote and isolated region is like, because there are no roads between villages or to get to large centres such as Montreal and Quebec City. See the initiatives despite the lack of resources, meet committed people and attend medical evacuations by plane to maintain the health and protect the lives of the people of Nunavik.

Over the course of three episodes of this popular documentary series, you will be able to follow Dr. Catherine Sarrasin, Dr. Saliou Mbaye, Dr. David Saab and the nurse Sophie Galipeau.

The filming of three episodes of the documentary series De garde 24/7 took place between February 14 and 19, 2024 at the Kuujjuaq Hospital.

What is De Garde 24/7?

This documentary series, broadcast on Télé-Québec since 2015, takes us behind the scenes of medicine through the daily lives of the staff of the same hospital, from different departments. Teamwork, relationship with death, relationship with the patient, management of emotions and stress, each professional has their own way of living their job and exercising it. At different stages of their careers, they also face common challenges.

The camera follows these doctors and nurses as they face situations where a patient's life is in their hands, when they have difficult decisions to make, and when they enjoy the joys and rewards of their profession. We discover medicine and its many facets from the point of view of those who practice and live it, in order to better understand the motivations that led them to their vocation.
